Space Shuttle Enterprise Arrives in New York City!

History was made on Friday, April 27, 2012 when space shuttle Enterprise touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport in advance of her journey and arrival to her final home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Enterprise, attached to a NASA 747 SCA (shuttle carrier aircraft) arrived in NYC with a thrilling low altitude flyover up the Hudson River, past landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Intrepid Museum and the George Washington Bridge. Fans flocked to the Intrepid to watch from our flight deck, while other local residents lined the west side of Manhattan, the NJ side and rooftops to welcome Enterprise to NYC and catch a glimpse of this historic flyover.

Upon her arrival at JFK, Enterprise was welcomed by 1,500 guests at Intrepid’s invitation only ceremony. After a flyover for our guests, Enterprise touched town at JFK and taxied to a stop to become a most magnificent backdrop to the emotional welcome ceremony. The ceremony included remarks from Intrepid’s President, Susan Marenoff-Zausner, Honorable Charles Schumer, United State Senator from New York, NASA Deputy Administrator, Lori Garver, Intrepid’s Co-Chairman, Charles de Gunzberg, Major General Joe Engle, USAF (Ret) and Enterprise Pilot, TV’s Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy and others.

Enterprise will remain at JFK for the next few weeks until early June, when she is barged to Intrepid and then craned onto the flight deck. Intrepid’s Space Pavilion will open to the public on July 19.
