Thursday, May 24, 2012 marked Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s 21st annual Salute to Freedom Gala.
Country music superstar Trace Adkins, set the tone of the evening with a poignant performance of the National Anthem. Susan Marenoff Zausner-- Museum President-- served as the master of ceremonies, and led the celebration of the Intrepid Museum’s 30th Anniversary, recounting its rich 30 year history and honoring some of our Nation’s finest leaders.
That night, the Honorable Gabrielle Giffords was awarded the 2012 Intrepid Salute to Woman Award. Giffords received a standing ovation as she entered the room and reminded guests that an optimistic outlook, courage, and perseverance are paramount for success.
The 2012 Intrepid Salute Award was presented to Mr. Jamie Dimon, Chairman of the Board and CEO of J.P. Morgan Chase, while the 2012 Intrepid Freedom Award was accepted by the Honorable Leon Panetta, Secretary of Defense.
That evening, Ken Fisher, the incoming Co-Chairman of the Museum presented outgoing Co-Chairmen Charles de Gunzburg and Rich Santulli with an original piece of Intrepid’s flight deck wood carved into a small replica of the space shuttle Enterprise. Mr. Fisher expressed his heartfelt thanks for both de Gunzburg and Santullis’ tireless work over the past six years.
As Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum looks towards the future—and the arrival of space shuttle Enterprise— it is also important to recount the past, honoring the unique fabric of people that brought the Museum to this pivotal moment in its 30 year history.
