Intrepid Sails to over 11,000 New York City Students!

As the Intrepid Museum complex undergoes extensive renovation, the education team continues to bring its exciting hands-on programming to New York City schools. The Museum’s Education Department is pleased to announce they have exceeded their initial projection for school program bookings for the 2007-2008 school year!

To date, Intrepid’s educators have completed 360 programs, of over 500 programs that have been booked, throughout the five boroughs. By June 2008, “Intrepid Sails” programs will reach over 13,000 New York City students in over 75 schools. These popular programs include artifacts, aircraft models and hands-on experiments and activities and explore topics such as aviation, water environments, women’s roles in WWII and daily life aboard the Intrepid. Our most popular program is “What’s in the Water;” a scientific exploration of water around the world and the environments and living creatures that we find in them. During the museum’s closure, these traveling programs have maintained the Museum’s high standards for complementing and supplementing New York State and national learning standards for students and teachers alike.

Intrepid’s popular Power of One program continues to flourish beyond the Intrepid’s decks. The education department has been thrilled to bring this eminent speaker program to New York City public schools at venues such as the New York Historical Society, Shea Stadium, the Cradle of Aviation and Chelsea Piers. Sharing their personal or professional experiences about overcoming challenges and achieving success, prominent members of the community encourage NYC High School students to examine their own goals. This year the Intrepid has welcomed astrophysicist Charles Liu, Barrington Irving, the youngest person and the first person of African descent to fly solo around the globe, former Tuskeegee Airman Dr. Roscoe Brown, Sharon Robinson, author and daughter of Jackie Robinson and the first African American NHL Player, Willie O'Ree. More than 900 students around the five boroughs have been able to participate in the Power of One so far this year.

For the third consecutive year, the Intrepid is pleased to be able to provide after school academic programming as a part of the New York City Council’s Cultural After School Adventures program. For the 2007-2008 school year Intrepid educators continue their work with students in nine schools across the five boroughs.
