WEEKEND CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF APOLLO 11 MOON LANDING MISSION WITH
NASA INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITS AND OUTER WORLDLY DEMONSTRATIONS
NASA astronaut Michael Massimino will kick-off NASA weekend at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street at 12th Avenue), Manhattan, by sharing his outer worldly experiences with a group of 200 New York City students from Aviation High School and MS 137 (Queens) on Friday, November 20th from 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
Massimino, a Franklin, New York native, recently returned from the Hubble telescope servicing mission and is the first person to ever “tweet” from space.
The weekend, which celebrates the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11, the first successful lunar landing mission which took place in July 1969, will include interactive programs and demonstrations paying tribute to NASA’s efforts and achievements.
Among the NASA artifacts and multimedia programs and exhibits that visitors will experience all weekend are lunar samples, a 3-D Mars presentation with a Mars Rover, an authentic Mars Mark III space suit model and the history of Apollo revealed through graphics and models.
The USS Intrepid served as a primary NASA recovery vessel before being decommissioned in 1974.
