***
300 FT. CRANE TO LIFT CONCORDE FROM BARGE ONTO PIER
ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 20TH
In preparation for the reopening of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, the British Airways Concorde will return to Pier 86 in a series of moves beginning on Thursday, October 16 and culminating on Monday, October 20, 2008.
- On Thursday, October 16 at approximately 7:00 a.m., the Concorde will be lifted by Bay Crane onto a floating Weeks Marine barge at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, 50 Aviation Road. On site contact is Jody Fisher (347) 419-0444.
- On Thursday, October 16 after the Concorde is in place on the barge, it will be tugged by Weeks Marine to their waterfront yard in Jersey City. The Concorde will be stored temporarily in a facility that will not be visible by water or accessible by land.
- On Monday, October 20 beginning at approximately 5:00 a.m., the barge carrying the Concorde will be towed by Weeks Marine from Jersey City up the Hudson River to Pier 86 where it will be tied in place on the north side of the pier. At approximately 9:00 a.m., a 300-foot crane will lift the Concorde approximately 100 feet into the air, clearing a row of flagpoles along the edge of the newly built pier, and onto its new pad at the end of Pier 86, where it will be permanently installed.
The British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world, has been a staple of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum since its arrival to Pier 86 in 2003.
On Monday, October 20, media will have access to Pier 86 for the final move of the Concorde from the barge to the pier. Cameras will also have access to a newly-constructed tower on Pier 86, providing approximately 20 feet of elevation for photos. Throw approximately 75 feet. Long lenses are recommended.
