MEDIA ADVISORY

FORMER ASTRONAUT SCOTT CARPENTER TO
SPEAK WITH NYC YOUTH AT
INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM

Former NASA astronaut and one of the original seven members of Project Mercury, Scott Carpenter will discuss his experiences with a group of approximately 170 New York City high school students from Jackie Kennedy Onassis High School, Central Park East High School, Queens High School of Science and Martin Luther King High School for Law Advocacy and Community Justice as part of the Intrepid Power of One continuing education program on Thursday, April 23th from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue), Manhattan.

In 1962, Carpenter piloted the NASA mission Mercury-Atlas 7 which made three orbits around earth.  After reentry, Carpenter was recovered in the Atlantic Ocean by the USS Intrepid.  Carpenter was the second American to orbit the earth and fourth American astronaut in space.

The Intrepid Museum’s Power of One program allows students to meet and hear from community members who share their experiences and insights about the challenges to achieve success, the importance of civic involvement and a love of their country.  It is based on the notion that a single event can change a young person’s life or start them on the road to change.

The Power of One program is consistent with the mission of the Intrepid to “honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.”
