100% of Charity Day Revenues will be Donated to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund

NEW YORK, NY (September 8, 2015)– The Intrepid Museum today announced its participation in the 2015 BGC Charity Day on Friday, September 11.  Representing the Museum will be former NASA astronaut and now the Intrepid Museum’s Senior Advisor for Space Programs, Mike Massimino, and former NASA astronaut and mission commander, Scott Altman. Massimino and Altman will join BGC Partners staff on the trading floor at 9:00am to help raise money for Charity Day, which started in commemoration of the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald and 61 Eurobrokers employees lost in the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks. The Intrepid Museum has participated in BGC Charity Day for 6 consecutive years.

Mike Massimino is a veteran of two space shuttle missions, (STS-109, 2002 and STS-125, 2009) both of which serviced the Hubble Telescope, including the historic final repair mission in 2009. Massimino has logged a total of 571 hours and 47 minutes in space, and a cumulative total of 30 hours and 4 minutes of spacewalking in four spacewalks. He appears regularly as a space expert on news broadcasts and has guest starred on numerous television shows, including the Big Bang Theory.

Scott Altman is a retired captain of the U.S. Navy and NASA astronaut who served as pilot on STS-90 (1998) and STS-106 (2000), and mission commander on STS-109 (2002) and STS-125 (2009), logging more than 51 days in space. He also served as the Chief of the Exploration Branch of the Astronaut Office. Altman is also known for his role in the movie Top Gun, where he performed the famous stunts in the F-14 fighter jet for Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick.

“Charity Day brings hope and positivity to a tragic anniversary, as we aim to honor those who were lost by reaching out to make the world a better place,” said Mike Massimino. “On behalf of the Intrepid Museum, we are thrilled to once again join BGC Partners in their generous efforts to raise money for so many worthy charities around the world.”

Every year, BGC Partners and Cantor Fitzgerald honor those who perished on 9/11 by distributing 100% of global revenues on Charity Day to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund. Grants are then individually distributed to hundreds of charities worldwide.  Since its inception, Charity Day has raised approximately $113 million globally.
