GROWLER SUBMARINE RETURNS TO
INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM ON THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6

Refurbished Submarine to travel from Brooklyn Navy Yard to Pier 86

The refurbished Growler Submarine (SSG-577) will return to its home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at the Hudson River Park's Pier 86, located at 12th Avenue and 46th Street in Manhattan on Thursday, November 6, at 1:00 p.m. The Growler, which received an exterior refurbishment while in dry dock, will be towed by tugboat from the Brooklyn Navy Yard to Manhattan's West Side, in advance of the Intrepid Museum's reopening on Saturday, November 8th.  Once at the museum, the Growler will undergo an interior refurbishment and open to the public in spring 2009.

The Growler move will follow the below schedule. All times are approximate and may be affected by weather and tides. The move will happen rain or shine. Media will have access to Pier 86 for the arrival of the Growler.
  • The Growler will depart the GMD shipyard at the Brooklyn Navy Yard between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and begin making its way South down the East River.
  • The Growler will pass under the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges between 11 a.m. and 12 Noon.·    The
  • Growler is scheduled to arrive at the Hudson River Park’s Pier 86 between 1 – 1:30 p.m. where it will be moved into position alongside the pier and tied in place.
  • The Growler will pass the Battery and Lower Manhattan at between 12 Noon and 1 pm.
The Growler offers Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum visitors a firsthand look at life aboard a submarine and a close-up inspection of the once “top-secret” missile command center. Constructed in 1958 and on active duty for only six years, the Growler’s interiors represent an excellent look back into the Cold War 1950s and 1960s. The Growler carried and launched the 56-foot-long Regulus cruise missile.  It has been a staple of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum since its arrival to Pier 86 in 1989.
