INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM
DEBUTS NEW GUIDED TOURS OF
CONCORDE AIRCRAFT AND GROWLER SUBMARINE

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan, introduces new guided tours of two of their most popular attractions, the British Airways Concorde and the guided missile submarine Growler.

“Concorde: A Supersonic Story” takes visitors on a unique 45-minute guided tour of Concorde G-BOAD, the fastest commercial aircraft to ever cross the Atlantic.  Guests will learn about the aerodynamic advances responsible for this technological marvel, designed in the 1960s and operational until 2003.  The tour gives guests a rare chance to enjoy the comfort of Concorde’s luxurious first class cabin and get an up-close look of the flight deck.  The “Concorde: A Supersonic Story” tour will take place Tuesday-Friday at 1:00 PM and Saturdays at 9:00 AM through March 31.

“Silent Service: The Story of the USS Growler Submarine” takes guests on 45-minute tour of the former USS Growler, the world’s oldest existing nuclear missile-carrying submarine.  Growler patrolled the Pacific coast of the Soviet Union from 1958 to 1964.  The tour will uncover how 95 men lived on Growler for up to three months at a time.  Highlights include up-close looks at the periscopes, forward and aft torpedo tubes, diesel engines, tight living quarters and the mess area where the men ate and relaxed.  The “Silent Service: The Story of the USS Growler Submarine” tour will take place Saturdays at 9:00 AM starting on January 29.  Guests taking the Growler tour must be at least 36 inches in height, be in good physical condition and not suffer from claustrophobia or related conditions.

Tours are $20 for adults, $15 for children (ages 3-17).  Tours are most appropriate for ages 10 and up.  Advance reservations are recommended and can be made at http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/The-Intrepid-Experience/Guided-Tours.aspx

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is proudly supported by Bank of America.

About the Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum complex includes the 900-foot-long aircraft carrier ‘Intrepid’ with seven full decks and four theme halls; the guided missile submarine Growler; and an extensive collection of over 30 aircraft including the A-12 Blackbird, the fastest plane in the world, and the British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world. Guests can experience areas of the ship including the Flight Deck, Hangar Deck, fo’c’sle (commonly known as the anchor chain room), new multimedia presentations and exhibit collections, interactive educational stations and a state-of-the-art public pier.

Guests to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum also can experience the 12,240 square-foot interactive Exploreum – which contains a variety of hands-on exhibits – that teaches guests about the different properties of the sea, air, space and living at sea as each relates to the ship Intrepid.
