New York, NY (December 30, 2013) – The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum welcomed its one-millionth visitor over the weekend of December 20-21, marking the second year in a row – and the second time ever – the museum hit that milestone number.
"We're thrilled that so many people visited – and returned – to Intrepid in 2013. It shows what a special and important institution this is in both the immediate and greater communities," said Susan Marenoff-Zausner, President of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. "2013 was challenging. Hurricane Sandy hit us all hard and Intrepid was not spared. Important areas of the Museum were closed for months. Sequestration resulted in a limited Fleet Week celebration, a time that is always extremely popular at Intrepid. Yet we still had one of our busiest years in our more than 30 year history as a museum."
Since its historic refurbishment in 2007-08, Intrepid has grown its offerings exponentially, with an expanded aircraft collection and the addition of the Space Shuttle Enterprise. Intrepid also has reinvigorated its STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education experiences, which bring school kids from around the tri-state area to the museum for unique sessions with Intrepid Education Staff. Programs are aligned with state and national standards and promote literacy, scientific investigation, STEM skills, curiosity, leadership development, and hands-on learning.
"The Intrepid's exhibits and programming continues to grow allowing our education programs, particularly STEM, to flourish and be offered to a growing population of students and of course offer out visitors an ever exciting opportunity to learn about Intrepid's history," Marenoff-Zausner added.
