specifically for the commemoration
Pearl Harbor survivors and widows will join keynote speaker Commander Regina Gallagher Marengo, President of the Intrepid Museum Bill White, the President of Croatia Stjepan Mesić and other distinguished guests in a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the 67th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7th, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, West 46th Street at 12th Avenue, Manhattan.
The ceremonial wreath will be blessed using water from the USS Arizona, the best-known of all the ships which were sunk on December 7, 1941, which is now a memorial to the attack in Oahu, HI.
The Pearl Harbor survivors – all in their late 70s to late 80s in age – are each from the New York metropolitan area. The ceremony will include presentations from the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association; the presentation of the National Colors by Academy Cadet Squadron, New York Wing, Northeast Region, Civil Air Patrol; and the performance of the National Anthem by Lee Schwartz.
President Mesić will be on hand for a special recognition of an American-Croatian Navy Seaman who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest decoration for valor, for his actions in Pearl Harbor in 1941. The medal went unawarded for 65 years, until the man’s relatives in Croatia were successfully identified and located.
The ceremony will conclude with the playing of taps and a flyover by five SNJ World War II training planes.
