INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM OPENS TEMPORARY EXHIBITION SHOWCASING INTREPID SAILORS’ STORIES AND SOUVENIRS FROM ADVENTURES ABROAD

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum today announced the new temporary exhibition, Ports of Call, which is now open in the Intrepid Museum’s hangar deck.

Intrepid’s missions took the ship and crew to cities around the globe—Cannes and Copenhagen, Halifax and Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney. At each port of call, 3,000 crew members fanned out to explore local tourist attractions, historic sites, souvenir shops, restaurants and bars. These adventures left lasting impressions on Intrepid’s crew members, most of whom had never traveled outside the United States.  After each deployment, sailors regaled their families with stories of faraway places. Decades later, these same men and their families entrusted their souvenirs to the Intrepid Museum.

Ports of Call explores the significance of these journeys to the young sailors who formed Intrepid’s crew. The exhibition invites visitors into a 1960s home, reminiscent of those where Intrepid crew members shared their stories and displayed their keepsakes. The exhibition includes souvenirs, memorabilia, photographs, film footage, and oral histories, all drawn from the Intrepid Museum’s collections.

Ports of Call is free with general admission to the Museum. For more information, visit www.intrepidmuseum.org.
