CRANE TO LIFT SIKORSKY HELICOPTER FROM
STATEN ISLAND PIER ONTO INTREPID FLIGHT DECK
A crane will lift the 5,000 lb Sikorsky helicopter from Homeport Pier onto the flight deck of the Intrepid on Wednesday, August 20th, 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, Homeport Pier, 455 Front Street, Staten Island, New York.
Originally purchased by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum from CFC Aviation in Georgetown, Texas in January 2007, the Sikorsky aircraft has been in Copley, Ohio since April 2007 for refurbishment. The S-55 model is a two-deck helicopter that first flew in 1949 and was used by all branches of military.
Overseeing the operation will be Eric Boehm of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum who is able to comment on the transfer of the Sikorsky helicopter, the aircraft restoration program and provide a progress report of ongoing restoration projects.
The Intrepid has been “on leave” in Staten Island for renovations while Pier 86 is being reconstructed and will return in October, 2008 and open to the public on November 8th.
