NEW EXHIBIT AND TOUR HEADLINE MONTH-LONG
“SALUTE TO WOMEN” AT
INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM
IN HONOR OF WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
In honor of Women’s History Month in March, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, located at Pier 86 (46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan, is launching a celebration entitled “Salute To Women” in honor of women who have served our nation – both in military uniform and out – with a series of events designed to honor, educate and inspire the next generation of female leaders.
Despite the fact that not a single woman ever served aboard Intrepid during its active duty, Intrepid is serving as the focal point for Women’s History Month events in March, which include a new exhibit titled “Women in Aviation: World War II” examining the wartime contributions of pioneering women who served as pilots during World War II, as well as the new guided Museum tour “Extraordinary Stories of Women in Sea, Air and Space” exploring the role of women in military from the 1940s through today.
Key events throughout the month of events include:
- Thursday, March 1: Opening of New Exhibition “Women in Aviation: World War II”
- “Women in Aviation: World War II” examines the emergence of women into the discipline of aviation. Consisting of more than 40 artifacts, including rare videos, pilot uniforms, log books, pilot gear and photographs, the exhibition introduces guests to the first female fliers of the early 1900s and spans through the end of the second World War. Highlights include original Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) uniforms, a video that was used to explain the WASP program to servicemen, a flight suit of a Long Island female Grumman test pilot and trophies from women’s flight competitions of the 1930s. While the primary focus of the exhibition is on American women’s wartime aviation efforts, the exhibition provides international context by featuring a few artifacts showcasing the efforts of the women who served in the Allied Powers, including Soviet women who were the only female combat pilots of WWII. The exhibit runs through July 8 and is free with Museum admission.
- Thursday, March 1 through Saturday, March 31, Daily, Extraordinary Stories of Women in Sea, Air and Space Guided Tour:
- While no women actually served aboard USS Intrepid, this guided tour will explore the role women have played in the United States Military from the 1940s to the present. From “Rosie the Riveter” to the first women in space, this tour will share insight into the female spirit, summed up by the iconic phrase “WE CAN DO IT!” Tours run daily from Thursday, March 1 through Saturday, March 31 from 11:30 AM – 12:45 PM daily.
