Welcome to the After Party by the Intrepid Museum’s Special Events Team. Here we’ll give you a look behind the velvet ropes at one of the most exceptional venues in New York, and we’ll tell you what’s catching our eye in the industry and beyond. Just like our events, each of us has a unique style. We’ll be giving you the good, the bad and the outrageously inspiring from our life aboard the ship. Join us for the After Party!

By Cherisse Challenger

I decided to challenge myself last week. In an industry where everything is go-Go-GO, I decided to think of “a way a day” to use my environment to wrap myself in tranquility.

DAY 1 Get organized!

I made a list. Not just any list—I make lists all the time. But this list was to help me stay focused on what is most important: snacks! When you factor in a healthy snack midmorning and midafternoon between your three meals, you keep your metabolism humming, which means more fat burned and more energy.

DAY 2 Ship walk!

Who needs a race track when you have a ship the length of three football fields? I laced up my sneakers and took a midday walk around the entire ship. Exploring the flight deck and stairways and walking through hatches gave me a quick cardio boost! I liked thinking about how many people had to walk this ship daily when it was active. No wonder they were in such great shape!

DAY 3 Fresh air meditation.

Today I decided I needed a little more zen in my day (nothing to do with unusual requests for huge events or anything, of course…). I grabbed a bottle of water and walked down to the edge of our pier by the Hudson River. I sat with my legs crossed on the ground and meditated for 20 minutes under the wings of the fastest passenger jet in the world, the Concorde. There was something really beautiful about slowing down and just breathing in the open air, beneath a jet that could fly so fast it broke the sound barrier.

DAY 4 A healthy food choice for a birthday party.

Do you dread the “secret meeting” in the boardroom to celebrate someone’s birthday with a “surprise” cake? Me neither—I actually love cake! But our awesome administrative assistant, Emily, does not, and it was her birthday, so we nixed the cake. Instead, we had a secret meeting to surprise her with a juicing party! We gathered healthy greens, fruits and veggies and made awesome combinations of juice in lieu of the traditional birthday cake! It was great to find out people’s favorite combinations. Some loved beets, kale and ginger, while others wanted apple, carrot and pineapple.  It was a nice alternative to the sugary birthday cake…but I’m still expecting a cake for MY birthday.

DAY 5 Office exercise!

We decided to implement Friday Dance Parties in our office! Why should our guests have all the fun? It’s a way to celebrate the work we’ve accomplished for the week, embrace the upcoming weekend and get a light workout going to our favorite tunes. It also helps with boosting morale in the office and strengthening camaraderie between the team…though we had to stop once someone dared me to do the worm. We all have our limits.
