I took a psychology class in college. Let’s just say that it didn’t work out too well, and psychology, with all of the synapses firing and chemicals releasing, is decidedly not my thing. That being said, it’s amazing how much the science of psychology can teach us about how our bodies deal with just about everything. Event management and event planning can often be stressful, whether it’s the high pressure of bringing a client’s vision to life, the unexpected disaster at the last minute, or the challenge of synthesizing all information, needs and expectations into one cohesive plan.
Kelly McGonigal explores the science of stress in her Ted Talk “How to Make Stress Your Friend.” In our fast-paced, often stressful work environments, it’s reassuring to hear that experiencing stress doesn’t have to negatively impact us, and that it can actually improve our quality of life. She highlights how dealing with stress with the help of others allows us to form bonds and partnerships on a deeper level. Our team dynamic is extremely important to what we accomplish here at the Intrepid Museum, and learning each other’s stress styles—and the best ways to deal with them—helps us to work together efficiently and effectively.
Take a quick break, reframe your mind-set, and make your stress work for you! Check out the talk here:
