The Intrepid Museum is pleased to welcome home Former Crew Members of the USS Intrepid as we celebrate the ship's 70th anniversary today, August 16. The Homecoming Weekend is open to the public, and will feature programs and events specifically tailored for our Former Crew Members and their families.

Education Demonstrations and Tour Guide Talks will take place throughout the weekend, and three Extended Tour Guide Talks will take place in the Lutnick Theater, highlighting World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War. Come and meet the men who served aboard the Intrepid, many of whom will be in Hangar 2 talking with visitors.  Hear about the different jobs, ports of call visited, and experiences they had on Intrepid.

A new exhibition, Working Below Decks, opened on Thursday, August 15, which highlights several of the tasks and jobs on Intrepid that took place below decks. On Saturday and Sunday, Curators from the Intrepid Museum will give special presentations about Intrepid's Sick Bay and Medical Department, the Laundry, its Print Shop, and Cobbler Shop.

The festivities kicked off this morning, with a Commissioning Ceremony, celebrating Intrepid’s 70th Anniversary. Museum President Susan Marenoff-Zausner shared Intrepid’s history before introducing Joseph Barry, a plankowner who served on the ship from 1943-1946, who spoke about his experiences on board and how Intrepid shaped who he is today.

“I’ve been to many reunions and each time, I am awed, I am inspired, and I am proud,” he said. “Every memory we have [from this ship] has a good and a bad side. But I have only thanks to give for my time in the Navy and on Intrepid.”

Additionally, Museum co-chairmen Ken Fisher and Bruce Mosler thanked the many veterans who were in attendance and spoke of the Intrepid Museum’s mission to honor our heroes, educate the public, and inspire our youth. There were performances from the USO Show Troupe and Winston and Ruth Goodloe, and the ceremony concluded with the laying of the Memorial Wreath and the Ceremonial Cake Cutting. A reception followed for the 300 Former Crew Members and their guests.
