More Than 300 Former Crew Members Celebrated Intrepid’s Commissioning

More than 300 Former Crew Members of Intrepid, traveling from 42 states, enjoyed a Homecoming Weekend at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, in honor of the 70th Anniversary of Intrepid’s Commissioning.

On Friday, August 16, the festivities started with a Commissioning Ceremony on the Flight Deck of Intrepid, with remarks from Museum President Susan Marenoff-Zausner; Ken Fisher and Bruce Mosler, co-chairmen of the Museum; and Admiral James Stavridis, USN (Ret.), chairman of the board for the United States Naval Institute.

Joseph Barry, a plankowner who served on Intrepid from 1943-1946, also spoke about his experiences on board and how the ship shaped who he is today.

“I’ve been to many reunions and each time, I am awed, I am inspired, and I am proud,” he said. “Every memory we have [from this ship] has a good and a bad side. But I have only thanks to give for my time in the Navy and on Intrepid.”

There were performances from the USO Show Troupe and Winston and Ruth Goodloe, and the ceremony concluded with the laying of the Memorial Wreath and the Ceremonial Cake Cutting. A reception followed for the 300 Former Crew Members and their guests on Pier 86.

Men who served on Intrepid during World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War were a part of the Homecoming Weekend, enjoying special Guided Tours, extended Tour Guide Talks and presentations, and mingling with Museum visitors. Several Former Crew Members volunteered to “Meet and Greet” museum guests, sharing their stories and memories from Intrepid.

The Museum also took the chance to interview Former Crew Members for an Oral History Project and collected artifacts from men and their families who traveled from 42 states to come to the Homecoming Weekend.

The weekend also was the debut of a new Exhibition at the Intrepid Museum, Working Below Decks, which highlights several occupations of crew members on Intrepid, including in the laundry, print shop, and more. Curators from the Intrepid Museum gave in-depth presentations about different occupations and parts of the exhibition throughout the weekend. Extended Tour Guide Talks in the Lutnick Theater explored Intrepid’s role in World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War in more depth.

As the Intrepid Museum honored the men who bravely served on board Intrepid, their presence on the ship, the new exhibition, and the presentations throughout the weekend allowed Intrepid Museum visitors to explore what life was like for these men, and others who have served our country throughout the years.
