The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum saluted the contributions of firefighters and paramedics this past weekend with a special weekend of activities.
On Saturday, a ceremony to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the FDNY Marine Unit was held on the Flight Deck. Festivities included a ceremonial wreath laying and water displays from FDNY fire boats.
The "Battle of the Boroughs", a cooking competition between chefs from 10 firehouses from all five NYC boroughs, highlighted Sunday's activities. Celebrity Chef Michael Proietti, a finalist on Food Network's hit reality series The Next Food Network Star, served as head judge and announced the winning team, the Borough of Manhattan, represented by Chefs FF Billy Bentiz, Ladder 1 and FF Jessie Klipp, Engine 7. They received a Pantry Set, courtesy of Food Network, a Coleman cooler, courtesy of Anheuser-Busch, and other prizes.
Second Place went to another Manhattan team - FF Steve Brunner , Ladder 36 and FF John McGinty, Ladder 36.
The third place team was Staten Island FF Kevin Brennan, Ladder 80 and FF Aaron Clark, Ladder 80.
Throughout the weekend, visitors were able to watch FDNY and paramedic demonstrations including rescue company rope slides, vehicle extrication, and ladder bucket rescues, as well as ambulance, squad truck and tower ladder vehicle displays.
Firefighters and paramedics were granted free admission to the Museum with discounts for family members and guests.
All Pier 86 activities were free with admission to the Museum.
Break Out in Song visited the Intrepid on July 18 and performed "Anything Goes" on the Flight Deck to the delight of Museum guests.
