With the arrival of U.S. Navy ships up the Hudson River this morning, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum kicks off its Fleet Week activities. USS Oak Hill (LSD-51), representing the U.S. Navy, and U.S Coast Guard cutter Campbell (WMEC-909) came up the river and will be parked at Pier 92 for public visitation through Monday, May 26.

At the Intrepid Museum, Fleet Week themed Tour Guide Talks start today and continue through Tuesday, May 27. Topics will include the ways recycling helped in World War II, how Navy ships get their names, stories from Normandy and the aircraft carriers of World War II.

On Thursday, May 22, the Intrepid Museum’s 23rd annual Salute to Freedom gala will honor GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel with the 2014 Intrepid Salute Award and the 2014 Intrepid Freedom Award, respectively.

And Friday, the Museum’s Pier 86 will start to fill up with activities, displays, demonstrations and more from our partners. The Office of Naval Research and U.S. Navy Energy & Environmental Programs will be on hand Friday through Monday, and the U.S. Coast Guard will have a Drill Team Demonstration on Friday and a Search and Rescue demonstration on Monday. Intrepid Educators and students from the Museum’s LIFTT (Leadership Institute for Today & Tomorrow) program will host education demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Other partners that will be at the Museum include the U.S. Army; U.S. Air Force: Joint Base Maguire Dix Lakehurst Fire & Emergency Services; the USS Intrepid Former Crew Members Association; Tin Can Sailors; American Legion 9-11 Memorial Post; American Red Cross; Rock of Ages; the Coca-Cola Rock Climbing Wall; the Manhattan Dolls; and the USO Show Troupe.

On Monday, May 26, join the Intrepid Museum and honor our fallen patriots at the Memorial Day Ceremony on Pier 86 at 11:00am. The ceremony will include the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag, the laying of ceremonial wreaths, a three-volley rifle salute and the playing of Echo Taps.

All pier activities are free to attend and the schedule is subject to change. Click here to see the most up-to-date schedule.
