The return of Fleet Week to New York City and the Intrepid Museum this year was marked by lively crowds, engaging performances and activities, and a solemn, reflective Memorial Day ceremony on our pier.

At the Intrepid Museum’s Memorial Day ceremony, speaking alongside Admiral Bill Gortney, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and Intrepid Museum Co-Chairman Kenneth Fisher, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio paid homage to all the men and women who currently serve or who have served in our armed forces. Mr. de Blasio’s father served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

“Now the Intrepid has always meant a lot to me,” Mr. de Blasio said. “Whenever I’ve been here, it doesn’t feel abstract, doesn’t feel I’m in a museum. It feels like I’m touching something that is part of our own family’s lives.”

Mr. de Blasio placed one of four wreaths into the Hudson River, commemorating deceased soldiers. A 100-foot American flag was unfurled across the pier, as well.

Also on Memorial Day, the Intrepid Museum dedicated 13 new Seats of Honor in the Allison & Howard Lutnick Theater, memorializing men who combined to give 115 years of collective service for our country. Museum Members were also treated to a special Memorial Day breakfast, under the record-breaking Concorde.

The arrival of U.S. Navy ships on Wednesday, May 21 kicked off an exciting week of displays and demonstrations. Throughout Fleet Week, visitors from all over the country and the world came to the Intrepid Museum and were treated to acts from the USO Show Troupe, themed Tour Guide Talks that took guests throughout Intrepid to explore its history, and riveting demonstrations from the U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue team.

The Museum also hosted its 23rd annual Salute to Freedom gala, honoring GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. Secretary Hagel was honored with the 2014 Intrepid Freedom Award for his distinguished service promoting and defending the values of freedom and democracy as Secretary of Defense, U.S. Senator and his decorated service in the U.S. Army. Mr. Immelt received the 2014 Intrepid Salute Award in honor of his outstanding business and philanthropic achievements that include investments in defense technology, global education programs and employing veterans.
