On Thursday, November 11th, the Intrepid hosted its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, to honor the brave men and women whose service and sacrifice have made our freedom a reality.
Many of Intrepid’s former crewmembers were present, serving as “real life” inspirations; proud to have served and feeling lucky to-- as one former crewmember said--- “be standing perpendicular to the flight deck.” The former crewmembers joined Intrepid’s Executive Director Susan Marenoff; Brigadier General William D. Razz Waff, US Army; and Chaplain Lieutenant David Rozanek, US Coast Guard on the flight deck for a moving ceremony and a wreath toss to commemorate our fallen heroes. Other ceremony participants included the Color Guard from the Naval Operations Center from Bronx, NY and Sgt Veronica Gonzales, US Army, who sang a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.
Free museum admission was extended to all Veterans in gratitude of their commitment and service to the nation. Throughout the day, Veterans and their families also enjoyed free guided tours of the Intrepid.
The 106th Rescue Wing landed its impressive HH-60 Helicopter on the Flight Deck and visitors were invited to meet with the flight crew and explore the cockpit.
Dave Cummings of Hoops for Heroes was also onboard. Veterans and other museum guests cheered him on as he shot foul shots on the flight deck in an effort to raise funds for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Veterans Day marked Cummings’ half way mark, 500,000 baskets bringing him one “swish” closer to his goal: 1 million foul shots!
The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum was honored to recognize all Veterans in attendance and again, pays its respects to those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in serving under all branches of the military.
