On Tuesday, November 22, the Intrepid Museum hosted a Thanksgiving celebration for 200 children and adults who are currently living in transitional housing.

The Museum partners with the New York City Department of Homeless Services to provide free programs for families in transitional housing. This past September, 61,931 homeless people, including 15,691 families with 24,148 children, slept in shelters each night in New York City. The Museum’s annual Gift of Thanksgiving aims to give families, particularly the children, a night of ease, entertainment and education.

Families went on a tour of the ship and the Space Shuttle Pavilion, where they were greeted by a surprise special guest—former astronaut Mike Massimino—who talked to the kids about what it takes to become an astronaut. They were also treated to a performance by the Museum’s own theater company, the Crossing the Line Players. In its interactive science show Blast Off!, children learned how spaceships, including space shuttles, launched into space and came back home.

Museum staff, along with volunteers from the American Legion, served families a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. After dinner, kids explored the Museum’s interactive exhibits, participated in educational activities, saw a show in the pop-up planetarium and even confronted some stormtroopers from the 501st Legion’s Empire City Garrison—who tried to invade the festivities from their galaxy far, far away. Some parents joined in on the fun, while others took the opportunity just to sit and talk, knowing that their kids were playing in a safe environment.

The dinner was catered by CxRA, and refreshments were provided by the Coca-Cola Company. Donations of linens, chairs and beautiful centerpieces by Broadway Party Rentals and ZAK Events made the Museum festive and inviting. And Flight Avionics provided free access to the 4D film Stories of Intrepid.

The Museum thanks everyone who attended and helped make the Gift of Thanksgiving a warm, memorable night for all.

This program is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Community engagement programs at the Intrepid Museum are generously supported by the Rose M. Badgeley Residuary Charitable Trust, Cowles Charitable Trust, May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, and Julia and Patricia Peloso-Barnes.
