Disability Awareness Month Continues Today At The Intrepid Museum
Posted: 10/1/2013 9:21:41 AM

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is working to make the Museum, its collection, and its programs accessible for individuals with disabilities. Team Access, part of the Education Department, designs and leads specialized Guided Tours and activities for visiting school groups, families, adults, and community organizations for more than 2,000 visitors each year. This October, the Intrepid Museum once again is planning events and programs for Disability Awareness Month

Did you know? Approximately 18% of all Pre-K to 12th grade classrooms that schedule guided educational programs at the Intrepid Museum self-identify as having special and unique needs.

In honor of Disability Awareness Month, the Museum will be hosting special events for and about people with developmental variations within our community. A few highlights (schedule subject to change):

    • On October 27, the Special Olympics Floor Hockey team, the Manhattan Flames, will demonstrate their training and skills.
    • The Guide Dog Foundation, on October 13, and Essex County Seeing Eye, on October 27, will bring their latest classes of puppies-in-training to the Museum.
    • On October 16, Intrepid Museum is participating in the national Disability Mentoring Day, organized by the Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities.
    • A SUPERSONIC touch tour for families with children who are blind or have low vision for members of the National Association of Parents of Children with Visual Impairments (NAPVI) will take place on October 13.
    • On October 26, there will be a pilot Access Family Program designed specifically for adults (18+) and their families or caregivers. Highlighting the sailors’ jobs on Intrepid as well as their methods for relaxation, participants will find similarities between their own communities and the “city at sea.”

Ensuring a welcoming and engaging environment for everyone, the Museum offers regular programs for visitors who are blind or partially-sighted, Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing, and individuals who have autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, mobility restrictions, dementia, and emotional or behavioral challenges. Throughout October, there will be a variety of public access programs that are also offered year-round:

    • There is an Early Morning Opening program on October 5, which invites families affected by Autism to take a guided Crew’s Eye View tour while the museum is not yet open to the public. There are drop-in activities and exclusive use of the Exploreum Interactive Hall.
    • American Sign Language-led tours with voice interpretation will highlight the Crew’s Views of life aboard Intrepid and the temporary exhibit Working Below Decks on October 6 and October 26.
    • On October 9, The Stories Within program for individuals with dementia and their caregivers will focus on World War II. Participants will handle artifacts, sing songs, and look at historic photographs that relate to what life was like aboard Intrepid and at home in the 1940s.
    • The Superheroes! Access Family Program for Children with Development and Learning Disabilities (ages 5-17) will celebrate the heroes within the community and those with super powers on October 27.

Team Access conducts Museum staff training to increase awareness of visitors’ needs and the accommodations the Museum offers to the public, such as large print brochures, lightweight stools, and a Verbal Description and Tactile Guide Book, which utilizes Braille, raised images, and a Talking Tactile Pen. In addition to providing guided experiences and self-guided resources at the Intrepid Museum, educators conduct off-site lessons for specialized schools, community centers, and hospitals throughout New York City.
