The Intrepid Museum’s Memorial Day Ceremony

Summer Salute to Heroes 2013, held all summer long at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, not only honored members of our military, Intrepid’s Former Crew Members, and other heroes in our community, but also gave our visitors amazing experiences on the ship.

The annual Salute kicked off over Memorial Day weekend in May, when the Intrepid Museum honored service men and women with a ceremony on Memorial Day, and filled Pier 86 with displays, performances, and hands-on activities during the holiday weekend. In June, the Museum’s free summer movie series got into full swing, with showings of National Treasure and Jaws, show on our Flight Deck.

July was a momentous month for the Intrepid Museum, as the Space Shuttle Pavilion, which had been damaged during Hurricane Sandy, reopened on July 10 with a ceremony honoring space exploration and innovation. The new Pavilion includes space shuttle Enterprise, the Soyuz TMA-6 space capsule, and seventeen dynamic exhibit zones featuring original artifacts, photographs, audio and films immersing visitors in the science and history of Enterprise and the space shuttle era.

Firefighter Appreciation Weekend, held on July 20 and 21, gave Museum visitors a chance to salute these brave men and women and learn more about the ways firefighters work to keep the city safe. The FDNY was on hand with interactive demonstrations, including a Bucket Ladder Rescue Demonstration from Intrepid's Flight Deck and demonstrating how they use their Personal Safety Systems. The weekend also included Battle of the Bands and Battle of the Boroughs Cook-Off competitions.

Later that month, SpaceFest 2013 took over the Intrepid Museum and Pier 86 as representatives from NASA, 3D Systems, Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Honeybee Robotics, LEGO Mosaic Project, Pixel Academy, Liberty Science Center, and Time Warner Cable’s Connect A Million Minds educated Museums guests on space exploration, science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and more. A free screening of Star Trek (1979) on the Flight Deck and an Astronomy Night on Pier 86 added some nightlife to the event, while current and former astronauts Ellen Baker, Charles Camarda, Jeffrey Hoffman, Lee Morin, and Mario Runco were on hand, providing inspiration to a new generation of innovators and scientists.

August was a month to reflect on Intrepid’s past and salute those who made it possible. On August 16, the Museum celebrated the 70th Anniversary of Intrepid’s Commissioning with a ceremony on the Flight Deck and the honoring of 250 Former Crew Members who traveled from 42 states to visit their former home.

More than 250 Former Crew Members attended the ceremony celebrating the 70th Anniversary of Intrepid’s Commissioning.

In addition to the ceremony on Friday, the entire weekend was devoted to Former Crew Members, with men who served on Intrepid during World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Cold War enjoying special Guided Tours, extended Tour Guide Talks and presentations, and mingling with Museum visitors.

Three more movies – Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Top Gun, and Karate Kid – rounded out the free summer movie series, and as Labor Day came and went, the Intrepid Museum wrapped up another Summer Salute to Heroes. Once again, the Museum was able to provide New Yorkers and tourists alike with the chance to learn about Intrepid and its history, investigate space exploration, and most of all, honor the men and women who we call heroes today.
