Guided Tour

On Thursday, October 15, the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum will introduce a new Guided Tour and new Tour Guide Talk. These offerings will complement the upcoming exhibition On the Line: Intrepid and the Vietnam War, opening October 16, and will provide deeper insight into the history of our artifacts.

The new Guided Tour, Rolling Thunder: Intrepid in Vietnam, explains how Intrepid’s crew overcame technological, strategic and cultural challenges during the ship’s three tours of duty in Vietnam. This 90-minute walking tour is designed to immerse visitors in the events and emotions of the Vietnam War as experienced aboard Intrepid, putting visitors in the shoes of the men on the flight deck. It approaches the ship as a historical site and a battlefield where crew members served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War. The tour is based on extensive research drawn from official documents, diary entries and memoirs, as well as firsthand accounts gathered through the Museum’s Oral History Project. This Guided Tour will be offered twice daily.

Our tour guides are also offering a new talk. One Day in Vietnam: October 9, 1966 reveals the events that occurred the day Lt. Tom Patton shot down a MiG-17 while flying his A-1 Skyraider—a rare instance where a propeller-driven airplane prevailed over a jet-powered fighter. All Tour Guide Talks are offered daily and are free with general admission. Ask at the Information Desk for exact times.
