Free Fridays are back! The Intrepid Museum is once again extending its hours free of charge on select Fridays every month from April through September from 5:00pm – 9:00pm. Celebrate the Museum’s 40th anniversary and enjoy special programs, including our popular Astronomy Nights with special guest speakers, demonstrations, stargazing on the flight deck and more. Or watch a movie under the stars on Intrepid’s flight deck during our free summer movie series featuring classic films also celebrating their 40th anniversary!

FREE FRIDAY INFORMATION:
Doors will open promptly at 5:00pm, Last entry to the Museum is at 8:30pm. All visitors must enter through the Welcome Center to receive a ticket prior to entering the Museum. Entry is not guaranteed and is subject to capacity. Doors may close earlier. Different areas of the museum may close earlier than 9:00pm or will be closed during Free Fridays.

ASTRONOMY NIGHTS
Astronomy Nights feature fun-filled and educational experiences for the whole family. Important information: this is not a ticket into the museum. You do not need to bring this the night of the program. Registering for astronomy night is just for a reminder. It is not a ticket.

Astronomy Nights are back!
The museum will open to the public for free from 5:00pm-9:00pm and will include a talk between Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise and former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino about Haise's new book Never Panic Early: An Apollo 13 Astronaut's Journey. Educational activities, demonstrations, and stargazing with local astronomers will also be available throughout the evening!

Friday, September 30, 5:00pm – 9:00pm ET


5:30pm-7:30pm Families and visitors with young children are invited to take part in the following drop-in activities:

Lunar Landers: Build and test your own lunar lander that can safely land when dropped from a high distance.

Design a Space Capsule: Design your own space capsule that can sustain three astronauts on their journey through space.

5:30pm-7:30pmLearn about Space Capsules - Mercury Capsule: Talk with a Museum Educator and discuss the Mercury-Atlas 7 and Gemini III missions that occurred during the Space Race!

6:00pm & 7:00pmPoof! Life in a Vacuum Demonstration: Discover the importance of the Earth's atmosphere and why astronauts need to wear spacesuits. Using a bell jar and vacuum pump, Museum educators will mimic the vacuum of space and its effect on objects.

6:30pm – Join Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise in conversation with former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino, on Haise’s new memoir, Never Panic Early: An Apollo 13 Astronaut’s Journey. The talk will take place in the Intrepid Museum's Space Shuttle Pavilion. (approx. 45 minutes)

Following the talk, Fred Haise and Co-Author Bill Moore, will do a book signing. Books will be available for purchase the night of the program. The Space Shuttle Pavilion will open to the public at 6:15pm. Entrance is not guaranteed if we reach capacity. For more information about the book click here.

7:00pm-9:00pmFlight Deck telescope viewing with the Amateur Astronomers Association

*American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for the Intrepid Museum demonstrations and will be available at telescopes on the flight deck.

The Intrepid Museum’s summer movie series returns this summer! Watch a movie on Intrepid’s flight deck, featuring classic films also celebrating their 40th anniversary!

Friday, May 27: Crimson Tide Due to a forecast of inclement weather, Intrepid Museum’s movie night, this Friday May 27 will be cancelled.

Friday, June 24: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial

Friday, July 29: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Friday, August 26: Blade Runner

MOVIE NIGHT GUIDELINES AND HELPFUL TIPS:

Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited.

Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets to view the films outdoors, free of charge, on a huge inflatable screen on the flight deck.

Light concessions will be sold onsite, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol is not permitted.

All exits are final; there is no reentry allowed.

Movie will begin at sunset.

The Space Shuttle Pavilion will close at 8:00pm.

The bridge will be closed during free fridays.

All movies will have open captions.
