Free Fridays are back! The Intrepid Museum is once again extending its hours free of charge on the last Friday of April, June, July, August and September from 5:00pm-9:00pm. Celebrate the ship’s 80th commissioning anniversary and enjoy special programs, including our free summer movie series, featuring classic “ship” themed films. Guests will also enjoy our popular Astro Live with special guest speakers, demonstrations, stargazing on the flight deck and more. Dates include: April 28, June 30, July 28, August 25, September 29

FREE FRIDAY INFORMATION:
Doors will open promptly at 5:00pm, Last entry to the Museum is at 8:30pm. All visitors must enter through the Welcome Center to receive a ticket prior to entering the Museum. Entry is not guaranteed and is subject to capacity. Doors may close earlier. Different areas of the museum may close earlier than 9:00pm or will be closed during Free Fridays.

ASTRONOMY NIGHTS
Astronomy Nights are back!
Astro Live features fun-filled and educational experiences for the whole family, including talks from leading scientists and activities & demos led by Museum educators. Local astronomers will be on hand with their high-powered telescopes to help visitors navigate the night sky and answer questions about astronomy and stargazing. Guests are welcome to bring their own binoculars or look through the telescopes of the experts.


Schedule:

September 29 | 5:00pm – 9:00pm ET
5:30pm-7:30pm - Families and visitors with young children are invited to take part in drop-in activities. Activities include:
  • Astronaut Self-Portrait: Create a portrait of yourself as one of the next astronauts to go to the Moon.
  • Mission Medallion: Create a commemorative medallion for a future space mission.

5:30-7:30pm - Breath of Fresh Air: Guests will do a small science experiment to learn how astronauts clean CO2 out of the air they breathe in space.

6:00pm & 7:00pm - Poof! Life in a Vacuum Demonstration: Discover the importance of the Earth's atmosphere and why astronauts need to wear spacesuits. Using a bell jar and vacuum pump, Museum educators will mimic the vacuum of space and its effect on objects.

6:30pm-7:30pm - Special Featured Guest Discussion. The talk will take place in the Intrepid Museum's Space Shuttle Pavilion. Live streaming of the conversation will be available if you can't make it in person to Intrepid Museum. View the live event on Facebook or YouTube.

7:00pm-9:00pm - Telescope viewing with observers from the Amateur Astronomers Association and Unistellar. Backed by partnerships with renowned scientific organizations, such as NASA and SETI Institute, Unistellar contributes to cutting-edge research on astronomical phenomena, including exoplanets, asteroids, comets, and more. * American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for select Intrepid Museum demonstrations, featured panel, and telescope viewing on the flight deck.

Doors will open promptly at 5:00pm, Last entry to the Museum is at 8:30 pm (doors subject to close earlier, entry is not guaranteed). All visitors must enter through the Welcome Center to receive a ticket prior to entering the Museum. The Space Shuttle Pavilion will open at 6:00pm.

MOVIE NIGHT GUIDELINES AND HELPFUL TIPS:

Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis and space is limited.

Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets to view the films outdoors, free of charge, on a huge inflatable screen on the flight deck.

Light concessions will be sold onsite, and visitors are encouraged to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol is not permitted.

All exits are final; there is no reentry allowed.

Movie will begin at sunset.

The Space Shuttle Pavilion will close at 8:00pm.

The bridge will be closed during free fridays.

All movies will have open captions.
