3 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT TO BE REMOVED BY CRANE FROM THE FLIGHT DECK O
THE INTREPID SEA, AIR & SPACE MUSEUM IN PREPARATION FOR ARRIVAL OF THE
SPACE SHUTTLE ENTERPRISE
In preparation for the arrival of the space shuttle Enterprise, three historic aircraft will be removed from the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum by crane and onto a barge in the Hudson River on Wednesday, April 18, from 9:00AM to 12:00 PM, at Pier 86 (located at 46th Street and 12th Avenue) in Manhattan.
A Supermarine Scimitar F.1 British Royal Navy fighter bomber, a Douglas F3D-2 (F-10) Skyknight and a Mikoyan Gurevich MIG-15 aircraft will each be lifted by crane and placed onto the pier, then lifted again and placed onto a barge for transportation to their new home at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in Glenville, NY.
Eric Boehm, Curator of Aviation and Aircraft Restoration at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, and John Panoski, Vice President at the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, will be onsite and available for interviews regarding the removal process.
The space shuttle Enterprise is set to arrive at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City on April 23, and in June will move by barge to the Intrepid. The shuttle will be lifted by crane and placed on the flight deck of the Intrepid where it will be on display to the public starting this summer in a temporary climate-controlled pavilion that will feature innovative elements in an exciting and immersive experience for visitors. The Intrepid continues to work on a permanent exhibit facility to showcase Enterprise that will enhance the museum’s space-related exhibits and education curriculum.
Museum officials will be available to discuss the landing of Enterprise, its move to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum and its public display at the Museum this summer.
