Celebrate Fleet Week at the Intrepid Museum

The Intrepid Museum will serve as the primary destination for the 37th annual Fleet Week New York, May 21–May 26, with activities and events that celebrate and honor the U.S. Armed Forces. Beginning on Wednesday, May 21 with the Parade of Ships, Fleet Week is America’s premier tribute to the men and women of the armed forces who answer the call on our nation’s behalf. Activities and interactive displays will take place at the Intrepid Museum and on Pier 86 (46 Street and 12 Avenue, Manhattan). All outdoor events on Pier 86 are free and open to the public. Wednesday, May 21
11:00am–1:00pm — Parade of Ships

  • Fleet Week kicks off with the arrival of Navy and Coast Guard ships in New York City. Hundreds of service men and women will man the rails of their ships as they travel up the Hudson River and pass by the Intrepid Museum.

12:30pm–1:30pm — Media Preview: Explore Intrepid: Engines & Boilers

  • Following the Parade of Ships, the Museum will preview Explore Intrepid: Engines and Boilers, an immersive virtual reality experience that transports visitors into the heart of the legendary aircraft carrier’s engineering spaces. Opening to the public on May 28, this innovative project invites visitors of all ages to virtually explore areas of the ship previously inaccessible to the public. After opening, the experience will be available for public access at the Museum on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:00am to 3:00pm in the Exploreum.

Friday, May 23
6:00pm — Free Outdoor Movie Night

  • The Intrepid Museum’s annual summer movie series kicks off Memorial Day Weekend with a free screening of Top Gun! Doors open at 6:00pm. The movie will begin at sunset. Space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis; entry is not guaranteed.

    Guests may bring lawn chairs, picnic baskets and blankets to enjoy the outdoor screening. Light concessions will be available for purchase. Outside food and non-alcoholic beverages are welcome; alcohol is not permitted. All exits are final—no re-entry allowed.

Saturday, May 24
10:00am–6:00pm — Hands-On Activities, Interactive Displays, Unique Events

  • Throughout the day, the Intrepid Museum will host free hands-on activities and interactive displays featuring the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, Naval STEM, U.S. Air Force, Department of Corrections & Community Supervision, Buildsubmarines.com, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Aero Flight School, SailGP, Naval Submarine League, NYC Ghostbusters, Warrior Bonfire Program, the Military Transport Association with antique military vehicles, and more.
  • Live performances will include America's Sweethearts and Operation Encore: A Veteran Music Project, showcasing a diverse lineup of veteran performers.
  • Visitors can also enjoy workshops and activities from the Intrepid Museum all day long, meet former Intrepid crew members, learn about our aircraft in our Restoration Hangar on the Flight Deck, and watch one-of-a-kind athletic military challenges and competitions presented by USAA. Teams from various military branches, FDNY, NYPD and more will compete.

11:00am–3:30pm — Harlem Globetrotters

  • The Harlem Globetrotters—featuring TNT, CHEESE and JET—will host ball handling competitions, trick shots including a “Game of HORSE” and shooting contests with special guest judges. Casual cornhole games will be available throughout the day, with tournament participation from the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, FDNY and NYPD.

Sunday, May 25

  • Explore free hands-on activities and interactive displays from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Coast Guard, Naval STEM, U.S. Air Force, Department of Corrections & Community Supervision, Buildsubmarines.com, U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, Aero Flight School, SailGP, Naval Submarine League, NYC Ghostbusters, Warrior Bonfire Program, the Military Transport Association with antique military vehicles and more!
  • Live performances will happen throughout the day, featuring Operation Encore: A Veteran Music Project which will include a variety of veterans performing, U.S. Army Silent Drill Team, U.S. Coast Guard Silent Drill Team, The Satin Dollz and more.
  • Visitors can also enjoy workshops and activities from the Intrepid Museum all day long, meet former Intrepid crew members, learn about our aircraft in our Restoration Hangar on the Flight Deck, and watch one-of-a-kind athletic military challenges and competitions presented by USAA. Teams from various military branches, FDNY, NYPD and more will compete. Watch as these teams compete in a tug of war competition at 11:00am, followed by a Fleet Week cornhole tournament at 1:00pm in partnership with Ward Boards and NY Cornhole. Visitors can also join casual cornhole games throughout the day.

12:00pm-5:30pm — Broadway Showcase

  • Audiences can look forward to dynamic performances from the casts of CHICAGO the musical, Disney’s Aladdin, Real Women Have Curves, Operation: Mincemeat and Titanique on Pier 86.

1:00pm — Book Talk with Montel Williams

  • Montel Williams will discuss his new book, The Sailing of the Intrepid: The Incredible Wartime Voyage of the Navy’s Iconic Aircraft Carrier. Montel will be in conversation with co-author David Fisher for a discussion of how the Intrepid’s World War II crew defied all odds and redefined the meaning of what it means to struggle, persevere and survive. A meet & greet/autograph signing to follow. Books will be available onsite to purchase or purchased in advance here. This talk is free with Museum admission.

Monday, May 26

10:00am – Memorial Day Ceremony

  • Join the Intrepid Museum for its annual Memorial Day ceremony honoring the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who have given their lives in defense of our nation. Civic and military leaders will offer remarks and join in a special wreath laying ceremony in honor of the fallen. The ceremony will conclude with a flyover by Navy fighter jets.

11:00am–3:00pm: Aircraft Talks

  • Visitors can go inside the Intrepid Museum’s Aircraft Restoration Hangar on the flight deck to learn about the process of restoring and preserving the aircraft on display at the Museum (approx. 20 minutes, on the hour).

11:00am–4:00pm: Meet the Author

  • Learn more about the men behind Intrepid’s highest-scoring fighter squadron of World War II from author and historian, the Intrepid Museum’s own Mike Fink (Hangar 2).

1:00pm – U.S. Army Drill Team

  • Watch breathtaking precision routines performed with bayonet-tipped 1903 Springfield rifles (Pier 86).

2:00pm – Search and Rescue Demonstration

  • Watch members of the U.S. Coast Guard demonstrate a search and rescue operation (End of Pier 86).

  • Legend-class cutter USCGC Calhoun (WMSL-759) from Charleston, South Carolina
  • Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessel HMCS Frédérick Rolette (AOPV 434) from Halifax, Canada
    • Please note: Canadian Navy Harry DeWolf-class offshore patrol vessel HMCS Frédérick Rolette (AOPV 434) will not be available for tours.

Manhattan, Intrepid Museum, Pier 86: (Public tours only on Thursday & Friday, May 22-23, from 10:00am-4:00pm)

  • Five U.S. Naval Academy YPs from Annapolis, Maryland
  • The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hawser, a 65-foot harbor tug, will be moored at Pier 86 from Wednesday, May 21 through Tuesday, May 27. While the vessel will be available for viewing during its stay, specific details regarding public access will be shared closer to the event
