New initiative brings hundreds of New York City Public School students to the Intrepid Museum for civic learning and veteran storytelling experiences in honor of America’s 250th anniversary

The Intrepid Museum has been awarded a Chairman’s Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary to support Civics and Service at the Intrepid Museum, a series of free educational programs designed to foster civic learning through history, dialogue and storytelling.

Coinciding with Veterans Day, hundreds of students from New York City Public Schools took part in a dynamic program at the Intrepid Museum, where they explored themes of citizenship, service and shared responsibility. Participants included many D79 students, comprised of adult learners and those pursuing alternative pathways to graduation, reflecting the Museum’s commitment to inclusive educational access.

During the program, students heard firsthand accounts of service and sacrifice from veterans representing the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marine Corps, including Bill Sheehan, Lisa Beatha, Gordon Huie and Román Baca. The discussion was moderated by Jessica Williams, head curator at the Intrepid Museum, and was followed by educator-led tours of the historic aircraft carrier Intrepid.

Civics and Service at the Intrepid Museum is part of America at 250: Service and Civics, a broader Intrepid Museum initiative commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial through programs that connect the past to present-day acts of citizenship. The NEH grant also supports the Museum’s annual Veterans Day, Pearl Harbor Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, which honor service members and their families. Throughout 2026, the Intrepid Museum will serve as a hub for America 250 activities and events that inspire reflection, participation and civic pride during this once-in-a-lifetime anniversary.
