FIFA World Cup and Sports in the Military

Jun 17, 2026 - 12:00pm

As fans from around the world gather to watch the FIFA World Cup, the tournament serves as a reminder that sports have long brought people together across cultures, languages and borders. That same spirit of camaraderie has always been part of military life. For sailors serving aboard Intrepid, sports offered more than recreation. They provided a sense of normalcy and lifted morale during long deployments.

Now through July 19, the Intrepid Museum is celebrating that tradition by hosting free FIFA World Cup watch parties on Pier 86. Fans can catch matches on large outdoor screens while playing games, and enjoying the food and beverages available for purchase.

Sports Aboard Intrepid

Sailors aboard Intrepid found creative ways to stay active whenever operations allowed. The hangar deck and flight deck became makeshift athletic facilities, hosting everything from boxing matches to basketball and volleyball games. During swim calls, the portside aircraft elevator transformed into a diving platform where sailors could cool off in the open ocean while fellow crew members stood watch for sharks.

Sports extended beyond the ship as well. When Intrepid visited ports around the world, sailors competed against local teams. These friendly games built goodwill and encouraged cultural exchange with the local community. Newspapers regularly covered these competitions, highlighting standout athletes and celebrating team accomplishments.

Whether played on the flight deck or against teams overseas, sports helped strengthen teamwork, boost morale and create lasting memories for the crew. They reminded sailors that even during challenging times, moments of competition and shared enjoyment could bring people together.
