WILLIE O’REE, THE FIRST BLACK PERSON TO PLAY IN THE NHL,
SPEAKS TO NYC YOUTH THEN TAKES THEM ON THE ICE
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of his debut into the National Hockey League,
Willie O’Ree, the first black person to play in the NHL, will discuss his experiences with a group of over
100 New York City elementary school students from PS 219 as part of the
Intrepid Sails Power of One continuing education program
on Tuesday, April 29th, 9:30 AM to Noon, Chelsea Piers, Pier 61, 23rd Street and the Hudson River. O’Ree currently serves as Director of Youth Development for the NHL Diversity program.
Following O’Ree’s remarks and demonstration, the students will strap on skates and take the ice at Chelsea Piers.
The Intrepid Museum’s Power of One program allows students to meet and hear from community members who share their experiences and insights about the challenges to achieve success, the importance of civic involvement and a love of their country. It is based on the notion that a single event can change a young person’s life or start them on the road to change. Since the Intrepid Museum has been closed for renovations, the Intrepid Sails program is bringing the Power of One to the students at other locations. The Power of One program is consistent with the mission of the Intrepid to “honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.”
