The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is a non-profit, educational institution featuring the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the space shuttle Enterprise, the world’s fastest jets and other historic aircraft as well as a cold war era guided missile submarine. Opened in 1982, the Museum, anchored aboard the former USS Intrepid, a National Historic Landmark, has welcomed more than 1 million visitors annually since 2012. The mission of the Intrepid Museum is to promote the awareness and understanding of history, science and service through its collections, exhibitions and programming, in order to honor our heroes, educate the public and inspire our youth.
 
The Intrepid Museum is seeking 2 seasonal full-time staff members for our GOALS (Greater Opportunities Advancing Leadership and Science) for Girls Summer Intensive during the summer of 2022. Individuals will be responsible for attending program training, implementing summer curricula to rising 9th and 10th grade female students and participating in summer program assessment. 
 
Total employment commitment from June 27 to August 26, 2022. The program rate of pay is $7,000 in total.
 
Under the guidance of Museum staff, responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Preparing, planning for and implementing daily lessons and activities.
  • Committing to extended work hours on certain days including: 
    • Student showcase evening (tentative date: August 16, 2022)
    • Out of state college visit (tentative date: July 29, 2022)
    • Overnight program at the Museum from August 19 to August 20, 2022.
  • Coordinating and supervising program participants at the Museum and during off-site fieldtrips..
  • Maintaining clean classrooms and storage spaces.
  • Attending all summer staff meetings.
  • Being responsible for classroom management and upholding appropriate participant behavior.
  • Creating/maintaining a respectful and caring environment with participants.
  • Inventorying lunches, drinks, daily supplies and report status to Manager.
  • Adhering to safety rules and guidelines of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
  • Other program-related duties as required by management.

Ideal candidates have experience working with teens in a supervised after-school, summer program, or school setting. Candidates should have classroom management skills; demonstrate an understanding of age-appropriate activities; and have enthusiasm for teaching and learning. Candidates should have knowledge of and experience with conflict resolution philosophy and techniques (especially team building skills, problem solving and constructive criticism) specific to middle and high school girls. Experience with delivering youth development workshops and/or STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related curricula, or lesson plans a plus. The ideal candidate will be eager to be part of a professional learning environment, have strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
 
Qualified candidates will possess or be in the process of obtaining a BS/BA in psychology, social/community development, education, science (chemistry, biology, physics, geology, computer science, engineering and/or technology) or related fields. MS/MA in social science, education or science a plus. The candidate should possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to speak languages in addition to English, a plus. Certification or willingness to be trained in CPR and First Aid required.
