Welcome to the After Party by the Intrepid Museum’s Special Events Team. Here we’ll give you a look behind the velvet ropes at one of the most exceptional venues in New York, and we’ll tell you what’s catching our eye in the industry and beyond. Just like our events, each of us has a unique style. We’ll be giving you the good, the bad and the outrageously inspiring from our life aboard the ship. Join us for the After Party!

How can events exude that WOW factor? As a planner at an iconic cultural institution, I get tons of unconventional and off-the-wall event requests. A great planner is willing to see a client’s vision and find ways to make it come to life, while still respecting the integrity of the venue.

One unconventional request was a client who asked to arrange a soccer event. My first thought was what better way to make it happen than on the flight deck of Intrepid, where you have the best of both views in New York City—the skyline and the Hudson River. Imagine the client’s face when I said, “Let’s do it!” It looked like Sue’s face (Kristen Wigg) on Saturday Night Live, when she learned about a surprise party for their granddaughter.  Check it out here!

At that point, I laughed to myself and realized I was insane to agree. I didn’t want to lose my job, but I was excited for the challenge.  At the end of the day, we accomplished the mission and succeeded, in the eyes of the guests and the client.  When all was said and done, we made it! No damage done—our exhibits remained intact.  Best of all, the Intrepid Museum had the opportunity to be a part of the WOW factor.

Another unique request was to set up a two-tier stage for a live performance during the after party for Men in Black II. And when all was said and done, we made it!

We even made this extreme request happen—the launch of a new vehicle alongside a new aircraft, all on the flight deck.
