Oral History: Jerry Feola
my letters. Don't forget, I'm trying to win this gal, right? I only just met her. I actually fell in love with her with letters. Um, you get to get you get to know someone really well. You know, cell phones today that we use, it's not the same. We didn't have cell phones back then, so it was all letters, but I I I got to know her really well. And most of my letters, except for one, and we'll probably talk about that, was they were up and I would tell her what's going on. It was very exciting. I was young guy and being catapulted off and just working on a it was very exciting.
One day I come to realize, you know, this is a war and they're they're trying to kill us and it kind of set in. I guess I grew up and I was it was different from then. But uh but so Arlene's letters to me now were interesting because she was telling me a lot of she would send news articles about the protests and was like it it irked us. But we wanted us and I because I would share with the guys in this squadron that you know look what's going on back home you know right there in Manhattan or throughout the country protesting against the war and calling us baby killers and all of that that
stuff. So it was it was a good source of information. There was other little things like you know how she was doing in school and uh she was concerned about me here and it was it was just it was a wonderful we were deepening a relationship by letter which is very odd. I mean that doesn't happen anymore today because of electronics but yeah letters were the amazing amazing I actually fell in love with my letter she used to put perfume on some of those letters it would make us crazy us the guys would smell us coming out of the the the mailbags like Jerry you must have a It was great.
