About This Event

Since its launch in December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope has transformed our view of the universe. Designed as the most powerful space observatory ever built, Webb peers deeper into space and further back in time than any previous telescope, allowing scientists to glimpse some of the first galaxies that formed after the Big Bang. Its observations have revealed extraordinary stellar nurseries where new stars are being born, captured stunning views of dying stars and their remnants, and provided unprecedented insights into the atmospheres of distant exoplanets.

But before Webb could unlock these cosmic vistas, it first had to survive one of the most ambitious engineering challenges in the history of space exploration: launch and deployment. Built over decades by an international team of scientists and engineers, the observatory was designed to unfold in space through a complex sequence that had never been attempted before. Its successful commissioning marked a major milestone for NASA and its international partners, opening a new window onto the universe.

Join us for a conversation with Begoña Vila, Webb Space Telescope Instrument Systems Engineer, and Knicole Colón, Webb Operations Project Scientist, as we explore the remarkable journey from concept to cosmos, and discover how Webb is helping scientists better understand the history of our universe and our place within it.

Live streamed via the Intrepid Museum’s Facebook, YouTube, and X, as well as NASASpaceflight’s YouTube and X, and Kerbal Space Academy’s Twitch.
