Intrepid former crew members and Former Secretary of the Navy Carlos del Toro to Participate in Commemoration

New York, NY (August 12, 2025) The Intrepid Museum will hold its annual ceremony to mark the commissioning anniversary of the legendary aircraft carrier, USS Intrepid, Saturday, August 16 at 11:30am ET. Intrepid was commissioned on August 16, 1943, and would play a vital role in the Pacific theater of World War II, and later the Cold War, Space Race and Vietnam War. Former crew members of Intrepid will be available for interviews after the ceremony concludes.

This year, the ceremony coincides with and will recognize the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in the Pacific; Japan’s surrender to the Allied forces on August 14, 1945, following years of devastating conflict. This victory brought peace to millions and ended one of history’s deadliest wars.

Over 40 former crew members will be in attendance along with their family members. Former Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro and Museum President Susan Marenoff-Zausner will offer remarks.

Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974 and was set to be scrapped. New York City developer and philanthropist Zachary Fisher spearheaded a successful campaign to save Intrepid from the scrap yard. The ship opened as the centerpiece of the Intrepid Museum in 1982.
