January 28 is International LEGO Day, a celebration of imagination, creativity and the joy of building. Here at the Intrepid Museum, one LEGO creation stands out as a true masterpiece: the LEGO USS Intrepid, a 22-foot, 250,000-piece model that brings the aircraft carrier’s history to life brick by brick.

The LEGO USS Intrepid was built by Ed Diment, a renowned builder from the U.K.

Ed was inspired to create the model after visiting the Intrepid Museum in New York City. Fascinated by the ship’s history and scale, he set out to capture its story in LEGO form—celebrating Intrepid’s service during World War II through incredible detail.

Constructed to minifigure scale (1:40), the model stretches an impressive 22 feet long and weighs 550 pounds. This scale allowed Ed to include intricate details, from LEGO sailors climbing masts to WWII-era aircraft and armaments like 5-inch guns.

Visitors can explore life on the flight deck through scenes that show sailors on watch and aircraft being prepared for takeoff.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the model is the interior detail. Sections of the ship offer glimpses inside, revealing more aircraft, working doors and additional features that highlight the complexity of the real Intrepid. Every corner of the model reflects Ed Diment’s dedication to historical accuracy and storytelling.

Ed built the model in sections in England and transported it to New York City, where he assembled it on-site at the Intrepid Museum in April 2011. The model has been displayed since, captivating visitors with its massive scale and meticulous detail.

Visitors of all ages can marvel at how 250,000 bricks came together to tell the story of an iconic ship and the people who served. It’s a testament to creativity, dedication and the enduring legacy of USS Intrepid.

Come see this extraordinary LEGO creation and celebrate the spirit of building, history and innovation! Purchase tickets here to visit the Museum and check the model out for yourself in the hangar deck by the main entrance.
