The Intrepid Museum, together with Atlas Obscura’s Online Experiences, presents a new live virtual programming series that offers a rare and up-close look at the Museum’s hidden gems and little-seen spaces, telling the remarkable history and stories behind them. Atlas Obscura’s mission is to inspire wonder and curiosity about the incredible world we all share and the programs were developed in the spirit of that mission.

The series consists of four programs that will take place on the second Tuesday of each month beginning Tuesday, May 11, with Making History Soar: Secrets of Historic Aircraft Restoration. Future programs will give viewers a fascinating peek inside the collections of the Intrepid Museum to see the unexpected items that sailors saved from their time in the Navy, a rare look inside the space shuttle Enterprise, and a guided exploration of Intrepid’s anchor chain room including the ship’s massive anchor chains. The series will run from May-August 2021.

Tickets are $20 and are now available for all programs.

Anchoring Intrepid: Inside an Aircraft Carrier's Chain Room

Anchoring a floating airfield—a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier—is loud, dirty and dangerous. It's also a rare corner of the maritime world that most people never consider, despite the unreal size of the gear. Jessica Williams, curator of history and collections at the Intrepid Museum, will be the guide for an exploration of the anchor chain room from the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid. Get an up-close look at the massive anchor chains, and learn how sailors raised and lowered the ship’s two 30,000 pound anchors. Hear stories about the crew’s ingenuity in the face of danger, including a World War II torpedo attack and a massive storm in the Atlantic!
