New Permanent Exhibition

Introducing 10,000 square feet of never-before-seen artifacts, former crew member oral histories, hands-on experiences, videos, photos and more. The centerpiece showcases a fully intact, fully restored, World War II FG-1D Corsair fighter-bomber, one of the few remaining of its kind.

FG-1D Corsair: Honoring History and Heroism

Following its arrival in October 2024, the aircraft underwent restoration by the Museum's in-house team of experts, preserving its authenticity and historical significance. The plane will bear the markings of the Corsair flown by Intrepid pilot Alfred Lerch, who earned "ace in a day" status by downing seven enemy aircraft in a single day.

Brown leather G-1 flight or bomber jacket with a fur-trimmed collar and brown fabric waistband. It features a front zipper closure and two exterior button-flap pockets. A leather nametag is sewn on the exterior front, left side, with gold embossing depicting naval aviator wings and reading: “Oscar A. Placco // LT JG // USNR.” Three patches are sewn onto the jacket—one on each shoulder and one on the front right.
